FAQs
Common Wireline Slip Ring Questions
How good is the signal quality of a ROTOCON slip ring?
The signal quality of ROTOCON brushless rotary electrical connectors is unmatched when compared to conventional brushed slip rings. In laboratory testing, measured channel resistance of rotating multi-channel ROTOCONs was found to vary less 0.2mΩ (zero point two milli-ohm) on average; orders of magnitude lower than that of conventional brushed slip rings. This stable resistance and low impedance allow ROTOCONS to be modeled as simple wires/cables in electrical systems designs. For more information, see our ROTOCON Advantages page for demonstration videos and white papers related to slip ring signal quality.
What is the expected lifespan of a ROTOCON?
ROTOCON rotary electrical connectors have been tested and used in excess of 1 billion revolutions. While each application is unique, ROTOCON brushless slip ring technology is designed and proven to outperform and outlast traditional brushed slip rings in most applications and use cases. See our full list of ROTOCON Advantages for more information.
Does electrical resistance change under rotation?
The electrical resistance of a ROTOCON is extremely stable and resistive noise is effectively zero – typically less than 0.2mΩ of variation at all speeds up to the rated maximum.
How is a ROTOCON different from a traditional slip ring?
Conventional brushed slip rings, which utilize metal-on-metal (sliding mechanical) contacts, are limited by rotational speed, are electrically noisy, generate dust during use, and require adjustment and maintenance for proper operation.
ROTOCON rotary electrical connectors (also referred to sometimes as a slip ring, collector ring, rotary electrical joint, electrical swivel joint) is the proprietary and exclusive design of slip rings engineered and manufactured by Meridian Laboratory to provide an electrical connection between stationary and rotating components of a machine or device, in a superior method.
ROTOCONs employ a molecularly bonded liquid metal film to achieve a brushless contact alternative to traditional slip rings. They are unaffected by speed and vibration, require zero maintenance, and generate zero conductive dust.
How often is maintenance required for a ROTOCON?
Never. Once installed, ROTOCON brushless slip rings are engineered for continuous operation throughout their entire lifespan. Their brushless design not only ensures industry-leading signal quality, but also eliminates wear points and common failure modes found in traditional brushed slip rings.
Are ROTOCONs waterproof / dustproof?
All ROTOCONs are environmentally sealed and resist incidental water ingress and high humidity. Most series of ROTOCONs can be customized up to an ingress protection rating of IP66. For heavy washdown, oceanographic, underwater, and other harsh environment applications, the MXO Series offers additional ingress protection up to IP68.
