  • Rotary grounds available for sensitive environments (RoHS)

Meridian Laboratory’s series of ultra-high current rotary grounds are engineered for applications requiring 3,000 amps or more of continuous electrical current at 100% duty cycle, delivering unmatched reliability and performance. Unlike traditional metal-on-metal rotary grounds from Tweco (ESAB), Lenco, and other manufacturers, which often require stacking multiple units together to achieve higher current capacity, ROTOCON ERG Series of ultra high current rotary grounds provides a single, high-performance solution, eliminating the need for multiple units and reducing complexity.

ROTOCON brushless ultra-high current rotary grounds can function as either a positive or negative connection, offering flexibility in installation across various high-power systems. Designed for easy integration, the ROTOCON ERG Series of ultra high current rotary grounds can be mounted vertically, horizontally, or at any angle without affecting performance.

With a maintenance-free, brushless design, our ultra-high current rotary grounds operate without grease, adjustments, or wear-related issues, ensuring consistent, stable contact resistance even in the harshest industrial environments. This makes them ideal for welding, electroplating, electropolishing, and other high-current applications, where maintaining fluctuation-free current delivery is critical for repeatability and efficiency.

General Specifications

ERG-3000+ Rotary Ground Specifications

Contact Resistance Icon

CONTACT RESISTANCE

p

0.025mΩ

or less

Contact resistance refers to the electrical resistance between the stationary and rotating portions, internal to the ROTOCON rotating electrical connector. This is measured without additional cabling or connectors, and is internal to the units themselves. This is measured stationary or rotating, regardless of rotational direction, speed, or orientation.

Mounting Icon

MOUNTING

p

END OF SHAFT

IN ANY ORIENTATION OR DIRECTION

This series of rotating electrical connectors is intended to be mounted at the end of a workpiece and is typically secured via set screws to the shaft, or has a variety of other options available.

DUTY CYCLE

p

100% CONTINUOUS USE

Duty cycle refers to the duration of time at which the ROTOCON slip ring can operate within a maximum specified condition. Not all ROTOCON slip ring and rotary grounds are tested or guaranteed while in an absolute maximum condition of all specifications (rotational speed, amperage, etc.) simultaneously. FAQs

      Common Rotary Ground Questions

What is the proper termination method for ERG-3000, ERG-6000 and ERG-10k rotary grounds?

For the best electrical contact and performance, we recommend lightly scuffing the face of the ROTOCON flange and the mating flange using Scotch-Brite or fine finish sandpaper such as 240 grit. After scuffing, clean both surfaces thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue. Ensure that your lug or mating surface makes direct contact with the flange, maximizing the surface contact area. Avoid the use of any washers, conductive greases, or other materials between the contact surfaces. Secure the connection firmly. Please contact us for our model specific mounting guide or to discuss your application.

Can a ROTOCON rotary ground be used as a mechanical bearing / turntable?

While it is expected that a certain amount of cable weight is present on the ROTOCON rotary grounds, they are not intended to be a load-bearing device used to support the objects being grounded and rotated. For exact ratings and more information, please see the model specific datasheets or contact us with any questions relative to your application.

Does conductive grease need to be applied when installing a ROTOCON rotary ground?

No. The application of grease of any kind, including conductive grease, between the conductive shaft or mating surfaces and the ROTOCON rotary ground is not advised. Meridian Laboratory recommends cleaning and degreasing both the mating surfaces and rotary ground prior to installation. If surface oxide is present on either component, light abrasion with 320 grit sandpaper or Scotch-Brite© Heavy Duty Green pads (or equivalent product) is recommended to ensure a robust electrical contact.

What is the expected lifespan of a ROTOCON rotary ground?

ROTOCON rotary grounds are built to provide reliable, uninterrupted electrical contact over an extended operational lifespan, frequently surpassing 500 million revolutions without requiring cleaning, conductive grease, or brush maintenance. Our designs emphasize long-term performance and dependability, using carefully selected materials and components to ensure a robust, maintenance-free solution.

Can a ROTOCON rotary ground support hanging cable weight?

ROTOCON rotary grounds are designed to support some cable weight as expected in rotary welding and other high current applications that require higher gauge wire. While instantaneous performance is not impacted, providing cable strain relief will only help extend the lifetime and longevity of the ROTOCON rotary ground. For exact ratings and more information, please see the model specific datasheets or contact us with any questions relative to your application.

Can a ROTOCON operate in any direction and orientation?

Yes, ROTOCON rotary electrical connectors can be mounted and used in any orientation and rotate in any direction. Certain uses may prolong longevity in a particular orientation, but they are designed to be used in every orientation.

      APPLICATIONS & USES

Common Uses for our Ultra-High Current Rotary Grounds

      Rotary Welding & Cutting

Tanks, pipes and other welding applications require a high current rotary ground to transfer current while the tubes or materials are rotated and welded, creating stacked tubes and other welded end products. Welding tables, welding positioners, and robotic welding all require the ability to transfer a consistent current while the work piece or welder is rotated or manipulated.

      Rotational Plating & Polishing

As parts are inserted into an electroplating or polishing bath, they are often rotated to ensure even distribution across all surfaces of the parts being plated, resulting in a higher-quality finish. High current rotary grounds are necessary to provide a steady, consistent electrical current to the workpiece or fixture as they rotate.

      Waste Water Electrocoagulation & Filtration

Rotating electrical grounds are frequently used in water purification applications that rely on high current to help remove bacteria, oils, and other harmful chemicals, particularly found during the remediation of acid mine water, oil and gas production water, and landfill leachate. ROTOCON high current rotary grounds operate consistently and without maintenance at elevated current levels.
