Slip Rings for the Marine Industry

In taxing marine environments, Meridian Laboratory’s ROTOCON slip rings excel at delivering uninterrupted power, signal, and data transmission under extreme conditions. Our corrosion-resistant, fully sealed designs withstand the rigors of saltwater exposure, high pressure, and temperature fluctuations. The maintenance-free construction of ROTOCON slip rings is particularly valuable in marine settings, where equipment accessibility is limited and downtime is very costly. Whether powering remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or facilitating power and signal transfer in marine cable winches, our slip rings deliver stable, maintenance-free performance. We work directly with marine industry clients to provide both standard and custom solutions that match their specific needs. For subsea imaging systems, research vessels, or oceanographic winches, ROTOCON's proven durability guarantees dependable operation in some of the world's most challenging oceanographic environments.

Application & Uses

Common Applications & Uses for Slip Rings in Marine

Stable Current and Voltage

ROTOCON slip rings are used in high-voltage, high-surge current applications to enable subsea imaging. Thousands of amps at high voltage pass through ROTOCONs in short bursts of time, facilitating concentrated energy discharges for detailed subsea mapping and imaging.

The ROTOCON Advantage

Traditional slip rings would be greatly impacted by continuous surges of high voltage and high current, leading to internal arcing and frequent maintenance or replacement. In contrast, ROTOCON brushless slip rings are inherently arc-free and can be configured to handle these surges without internal damage. They consistently provide stable, uninterrupted electrical power.

Sealed Design and High Reliability

ROTOCON marine-grade slip rings are critical components for communication and power between the vessel and the submerged remotely operated vehicle (ROV).

The ROTOCON Advantage

Our ROTOCON marine-rated rotating electrical connectors are sealed and internally fluid-filled for further reliability. Their maintenance-free design ensures longer deployments and reduces the need for topside servicing. Available with integrated subsea/marine connectors, they simplify installation and generate low electrical noise, minimizing data errors for cameras, sensors, and controls.

Perfect Signal Integrity and Durability

MXO-Series ROTOCON marine-rated slip rings are used on oceanographic winches to provide power and signal to the instruments lowered into the water.

The ROTOCON Advantage

Our ROTOCON marine-rated slip rings are 100% sealed and unaffected by water, temperature, humidity, and rough environments. They require zero maintenance, guaranteeing perfect signal integrity over time and significantly outlasting traditional slip rings. Their durability and performance have made them a top choice for decades enduring the demanding conditions of oceanographic research. In fact, our MXO series was used in the groundbreaking 1985 expedition led by Bob Ballard (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute) that discovered the wreck of the R.M.S Titanic.

Maintenance-Free and Consistent Performance

ROTOCON rotating electrical connectors are used in underwater wave power generators to allow them to articulate and orient to the direction of the waves for maximum efficiency, while also eliminating cable breakage.

The ROTOCON Advantage

ROTOCON rotating electrical connectors are ideal for underwater wave power generators, where maintenance is costly and difficult due to the challenging environment. With their maintenance-free design and ability to perform consistently in both indexing/articulating motions and continuous rotation, ROTOCONs offer outstanding reliability and longevity. They can endure hundreds of millions of cycles, perfect for applications that demand long-term performance without the hassle of frequent upkeep.
